Be in Control of the Basketball
[15 Minutes]
Together you will enjoy this simple game. It is fun and will help you gain better control of the basketball. You will also improve your basketball dribbling skills.
You'll need:
basketball watch
What to do:
- If possible, print out these directions. Read them together before you begin.
- Together, gather everything you’ll need.
- Explain to your child that the object of the game is to see who can dribble the basketball the longest at a slow, controlled bounce, at a medium speed, and at a fast speed using a high bounce.
- Together choose an area that will allow you plenty of space to dribble the basketball.
How to play:
- Allow your child to go first. The first dribble should be at a slow, controlled bounce. Count for her as she dribbles the ball. This will be her score when the ball is no longer bouncing or if three minutes have passed.
- Next count for her as she dribbles the basketball at a medium speed for three minutes.
- The last dribble should be at a fast speed with a high bounce for three minutes.
- After she has completed all of the dribbling challenges, tally her score.
- Now it is her turn to count for you as you practice these dribbling skills.
- Challenge yourselves by dribbling with your dominant hand and then your non-dominant hand.
- Also increase the dribbling time from three minutes to five minutes.
Useful information:
Being in control of the basketball while you are dribbling is a very important skill. I have been practicing a long time. My mom and I played this game and really think I can control the ball better. (Jill, age 12)
