Power Walking






 

Power Walking

[30 Minutes]

Power walking is one of the best ways to stay fit. Enjoying the challenge and spending time with your child while you power walk around your neighborhood.


You'll need:

• clock • timer • paper and pencil • water bottle

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through before you begin.
  2. With your child, plan a safe route around your neighborhood where you can take a walk.
  3. Talk about how long she thinks it will take to "power walk" the route as quickly as she can.
  4. Check the clock to see what time it is and write down the actual time.
  5. Set the timer for the estimated length of time, then go out and "power walk" the route. Be sure to bring a water bottle to keep your body hydrated and healthy.

How to play:

  1. When you return, check the timer. If time is left, figure out how much time it actually took, and how far off your estimate was. If the timer has run out, check the clock. How long ago did the timer run out of time?
  2. Challenge yourselves to improve your time the next time you go out for a power walk on the same route.
  3. Soon, you'll start feeling healthier, and you'll be proud of your improvement!

Useful information:

Power walking is hard. My dad is over 6 feet tall. He was nice enough to go slower for me to stay with him. We are going to go again tomorrow. He says the walking with get easier and we will go longer. (Beth, age 10)
