Penguin Race

Penguin Race

[20 Minutes]

With just a ball between the knees, you and your child can pretend to be penguins during the cold winter months. Winning penguins are those that waddle the fastest without dropping their ball.

You'll need:

• 2 rubber balls (medium size) • masking tape

How to play:

  1. Find a place in the home where you have room for movement. Mark a starting and finishing line with masking tape.
  2. You and your child will play against each other.
  3. Each player will place a ball between their knees.
  4. Start at the same time and waddle to the finish line. If the ball is dropped, that player must return to the starting line and begin waddling again.
  5. The first penguin that makes it to the finish line without dropping his ball is the winner.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What do you know about penguins? Where do they live, what do they eat, and what sounds do they make? Let's look in a book (or online) to find the facts.
  • Could you change this game so that we can pretend to be another winter animal? How would you play it?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing large muscle skills and balance.
