Find the Right String

Find the Right String

[15 Minutes]

Use extra string and yarn for this easy game that helps your child learn about measurement.

You'll need:

• string • yarn • clear tape • scissors

What to do:

  1. Cut string into various lengths.
  2. Cut yarn equal to each of the lengths of string.
  3. Place the strings around the room in different places, hanging some pieces by using tape, and laying others down in easy-to-see places.

How to play:

  1. Give your child one piece of yarn and challenge him to find the matching length of string.
  2. Play until he has matched all of the string and yarn pieces.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Show me your two pieces and compare them. Is one longer, or are they the same length?
  • Can you find something else (a book, shoe, and so on) that is the same length as this piece of string?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop pre-math skills and measurement concepts.
