Bird's Nest Egg Salad

Bird's Nest Egg Salad

[20 Minutes]

Your child will "chirp" with delight as you make this egg-salad nest together!

You'll need:

• radishes • celery sticks • carrot sticks • hard-boiled eggs • assorted fresh vegetables • lettuce • mayonnaise to moisten egg salad (optional) • plastic strawberry basket • plastic knife

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to line a strawberry basket with lettuce.
  2. Encourage him to fill the basket with chopped egg salad or sliced egg. He may wish to help slice the egg with a plastic knife.
  3. Help him add assorted fresh vegetables.
  4. You can sing this song with your child as you make this recipe (Tune: "Bingo"):
A blue bird sang a little song,
    And Tweetie was his name-o.
    Tweet, tweet, tweetie-o,
    Tweet, tweet, tweetie-o,
    Tweet, tweet, tweetie-o,
    And Tweetie was his name-o!
  5. You can change the color of the bird and sing it again!

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What shape is a hard-boiled egg? What happens to it when you make egg salad?
  • Have you watched birds make a nest outdoors? What do they use?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop small muscle skills, language skills, and an understanding of "part and whole."
