Why Do Leaves Change Color?
[15 Minutes]
Try this scientific experiment to help your child explore why leaves change color.
You'll need:
green leaves
rubbing alcohol (ADULT USE ONLY)
covered containers (some clear and some opaque)
What to do:
- Invite your child to place some leaves in a clear glass container. Encourage her to add a few drops of water and then seal the container.
- Invite her to place similar leaves into another clear glass container and seal it. Do not add any water to this container.
- Help her to repeat steps #2 and #3, but this time use opaque containers instead of clear ones.
- Place all of the containers on a window ledge where they will receive bright sunlight.
- Each day, compare the changes in the colors of the leaves. Help her to think about "why" the changes are occurring. (For example: lack of light, lack of water.)
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Why did you think leaves changed color before we did the experiment? Have you changed your mind?
- What is your favorite leaf color?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child to develop observational skills and an understanding of cause and effect.
