Jumping Raisins
[15 Minutes]
Did you know soda could make raisins jump up and down? Your child will be amazed by this experiment.
You'll need:
4-6 raisins
club soda, seltzer or lemon soda
tall, clear glass
spoon
What to do:
- Help your child pour club soda, seltzer, or lemon soda into a tall, clear glass.
- Let her add 4 to 6 raisins.
- Encourage her to observe what happens. (Raisins will sink to the bottom, then slowly rise to the top. They will continue to jump up and down for several minutes.) If she is wondering how the raisins dance, they ride on the gas bubbles that are lighter than the soda.
- When she is finished observing, she can drink the soda. She can scoop the raisins out with a spoon and eat them.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Why do you think the raisins jumped up to the top of the glass?
- Why did they sink down again?
