A Rock Walk

A Rock Walk

[20 Minutes]

Enjoy the fresh air and take a "rock walk" with your child. The rocks you find could be the beginning of a collection!

You'll need:

• basket or container

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to go on a "rock walk" with you.
  2. Challenge him to look for rocks that are not too heavy, but that he likes for one reason or another.
  3. Encourage him to tell what he likes about each--the shape, color, feel, and so on--as he puts it in his basket or container.
  4. At home, challenge him to sort the rocks from largest to smallest, to weigh them, and to decorate them for use as pet rocks or door stops.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How many rocks did you find?
  • How are the rocks alike? Different?
  • Which rock is your favorite one? Why?

While you are having fun together, this activity generates a sense of wonder, curiosity, and provides experiences related to nature and science.
