Fabric Crayon Flags
[30 Minutes]
You and your child can create your own seasonal display flags.
You'll need:
fabric crayons (can be purchased in craft stores and some office supply stores)
iron (ADULT USE ONLY)
cloth (cotton/polyester blend)
stapler and dowel (optional for display)
What to do:
- Invite your child to use the crayons to draw symbols and designs on white paper for a personal flag. Encourage your child to press hard on the crayon. (Tip: Encourage your child to draw designs that tell something about his or the family's interests. Together you create a family flag.)
- Place crayoned paper face down on the cloth. Place a plain piece of paper over the crayoned paper and iron for about 1 minute, making sure not to move either paper.
- Cut fabric strips and staple to the top and bottom piece of fabric flag. Let your child help you tie the strips to the dowel.
- Hang your flag in a special place or have your very own parade.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Tell me about your designs.
- Where shall we display your flag?
- What other kinds of flags do you know about?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop small muscle skills, an understanding of "cause and effect" and creativity.
