Make Homemade Watercolors

Make Homemade Watercolors

[25 Minutes]

Making these watercolors is at least as much fun as painting with them. Try this combination science and art activity that comes from your kitchen cabinet.

You'll need:

• 1 Tbsp. white vinegar • 1 Tbsp. baking soda • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch • 1/2 tsp. corn syrup • old muffin tray • toothpicks • paper • food coloring • measuring spoons

What to do:

  1. Together, gather all the ingredients.
  2. In a muffin tray or cup, help your child measure the baking soda and then add the vinegar. Watch the reaction together.
  3. Challenge her to add the cornstarch and corn syrup and stir it with a toothpick.
  4. Invite her to choose a color and add a few drops of food coloring.
  5. Help her make 2 or 3 colors and then paint a picture right away.
  6. This paint works best if used immediately. Make a fresh batch each time you want to do this.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Which part of this activity did you like best--the mixing or the painting?
  • How did the paint feel after it dried on your paper? How did it look?
  • What other colors would you like to make?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps introduce your child to a variety of artistic tools, mediums, and techniques.
