Make Homemade Watercolors
[25 Minutes]
Making these watercolors is at least as much fun as painting with them. Try this combination science and art activity that comes from your kitchen cabinet.
You'll need:
1 Tbsp. white vinegar
1 Tbsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
1/2 tsp. corn syrup
old muffin tray
toothpicks
paper
food coloring
measuring spoons
What to do:
- Together, gather all the ingredients.
- In a muffin tray or cup, help your child measure the baking soda and then add the vinegar. Watch the reaction together.
- Challenge her to add the cornstarch and corn syrup and stir it with a toothpick.
- Invite her to choose a color and add a few drops of food coloring.
- Help her make 2 or 3 colors and then paint a picture right away.
- This paint works best if used immediately. Make a fresh batch each time you want to do this.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Which part of this activity did you like best--the mixing or the painting?
- How did the paint feel after it dried on your paper? How did it look?
- What other colors would you like to make?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity helps introduce your child to a variety of artistic tools, mediums, and techniques.
