Multiplication War

Multiplication War

[20 Minutes]

This is a fun way to help your child practice number facts. The game can be modified to practice addition facts as well.

You'll need:

• a deck of playing cards

What to do:

If possible, print out these directions. Read them through together before you begin.

How to play:

  1. Let your child deal out all the cards.
  2. Each player turns over the top two cards of his pile.
  3. The player multiplies these two cards and says the answer.
  4. The next player(s) does the same.
  5. The winner of this round is the person who has the highest amount.
  6. If both players have the same answer, (example: 2 x 6 and 3 x 4 both equal 12), they have a “war”.
  7. To have a war, you and your child put your next three cards face down. Turn the last two cards face up and multiply them. Whoever has the highest amount, wins all the cards of this war.
  8. You may wish to remove the picture cards. If you keep the picture cards, the following numerical values may be given to the picture cards:
    Jack = 11
    Queen = 12
    King = 0
  9. The game continues until someone loses all his cards.

Useful information:

My grandpa and I love to play cards. He knows a lot of card games. Playing this "war" game really helps me practice multiplying and adding fast. I like the challenge. (Hope, age 10)
