Bird Walk

Bird Walk

[20 Minutes]

Seeking birds together is a peaceful way to spend time observing nature. Go outside to watch, then come inside to look at pictures.

You'll need:

• toilet paper roll • breadcrumbs or birdseed • portable tape player (optional)

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to take a walk to discover neighborhood birds. Together choose an area where you think birds may gather. Encourage her to spread out bread crumbs or birdseed. Wait quietly.
  2. Show her how to look through the cardboard roll to observe a single bird.
  3. Talk about the bird's size, color, or other special features.
  4. Listen for bird songs and calls. If you wish, make a tape recording to share with the entire family.
  5. At a later time, look through bird books and see if your child remembers seeing any of the same birds. Let her draw pictures of them.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How many birds did we see on our walk? Do you remember what kinds and colors they were? Tell me about them.
  • Which was your favorite bird?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop matching skills, listening skills, and observational skills.
