Rhyming Bag Game

Rhyming Bag Game

[15 Minutes]

Put your “thinking caps” on as you play a rhyming game with your child. This activity is not only fun, it helps build vocabulary skills as well.

You'll need:

• paper bag • household objects that have rhyming words

What to do:

  1. Place some small objects into a paper bag. Choose objects that rhyme easily with other words (consider your child’s age and his knowledge of words as you choose your items). Here are some examples: toy boat, toy car, toy cat, ring, ball, book, bell, hat, pin, etc.
  2. Invite your child to pick an item from the bag and then name a word that rhymes with the object. For example, if he picks up a boat, he may give you a word like goat or coat.
  3. Help younger children to think of a variety of words that rhyme.

How to use:

This is a great activity to increase a child’s vocabulary. You may wish to take turns and switch roles.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Tell me about one object you picked from the bag. Can you think of words that rhyme with the object?
  • Can you think of other things to put in the bag?
  • Was this game fun? Why?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop pre-reading skills and language skills.
