Math in a Picture Book

Math in a Picture Book

[20 Minutes]

Take one of your child's all time favorite picture books and use it to explore math concepts together.

You'll need:

• picture book

What to do:

  1. Choose a book and invite your child to help you count the pages.
  2. Together choose an object or character on the cover and count how many times it appears on the pages inside.
  3. You can create simple addition problems or even simple multiplication problems using the objects pictured in a book. For example: "How many hats are there in the shop window?"; "When Mr. Jones buys a hat, how many will be left?"
  4. If you think your child is interested, write the simple math problem out, so she can see how it looks.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • We looked for and counted hats in the book. Let's count all the hats we can find in our house.
  • Do you like math? What are you learning about math at school?
  • Can you make up a math problem for me to solve?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity provides experiences for developing concepts related to math and number awareness.
