Math in a Picture Book
[20 Minutes]
Take one of your child's all time favorite picture books and use it to explore math concepts together.
You'll need:
picture book
What to do:
- Choose a book and invite your child to help you count the pages.
- Together choose an object or character on the cover and count how many times it appears on the pages inside.
- You can create simple addition problems or even simple multiplication problems using the objects pictured in a book. For example: "How many hats are there in the shop window?"; "When Mr. Jones buys a hat, how many will be left?"
- If you think your child is interested, write the simple math problem out, so she can see how it looks.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- We looked for and counted hats in the book. Let's count all the hats we can find in our house.
- Do you like math? What are you learning about math at school?
- Can you make up a math problem for me to solve?
