Neighborhood Matching Game
[25 Minutes]
Talk with your child about the neighborhood in which you live. What does the word "neighborhood" mean?
You'll need:
instant camera
sheet of paper
markers or crayons
What to do:
- With your child, make a list of the different types of buildings in your neighborhood (houses, apartments, condominiums)
- He can help you make a list of the businesses in your neighborhood.
- With an instant camera, invite him to photograph the building and the person working at each location. (a phone call in advance might be helpful) Photos might include: post office/mail carrier, fire station/firefighter, grocery store/clerk, house, apartment, condominium/neighbor, police station/police officer, restaurant/owner or server, school/teacher, bus/bus driver, others?
- Use these photos to help him understand where to find the different people in the neighborhood.
- Ask him to match business to person. Together play concentration, turning cards over and having him find the match.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- How are the homes in our neighborhood alike? Different?
- Where would you like to live if you didn't live in our home? Why?
- Who are the people in our neighborhood that are helpers? Who are the ones that provide services?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity provides experiences for developing concepts related to local communities and occupations.
