Rainbow Poem
[30 Minutes]
Rainbow poetry not only helps to develop creative expression, but also helps to teach important grammatical principles such as how to use nouns, adjectives and verbs in English and the definition of nouns and adjectives. This activity also will help your child to develop vocabulary as you search together for new verbs for use in poetry writing.
You'll need:
paper pencil imagination
What to do:
- If possible, print out these directions. Read them through together before you begin.
- Ask your child to get a piece of paper and list the colors of the rainbow (in order: ROY G.BIV) down the left side of the paper.
- With each color ask your child to write an object (noun) of something that is that color. Help your child use the progressive verb tense (ing) to creatively describe what the noun is doing.
- Each color can stand alone or the colors can be in a cycle, each relating to the other.
- A shortened teaching model is shown below.
Teaching Model: Red sunrise climbing up the darkness kissing the stars Orange lilies swaying on the stalk playing with the wind Yellow butterfly standing on a petal sipping daisy nectar
