Green Wigglers

Green Wigglers

[25 Minutes]

Your child will be delighted to eat gelatin cut into fancy shapes. What a cool treat for St. Patrick's Day!

You'll need:

• lime flavored gelatin • water • bowl • spoon • cookie sheet with sides • plastic knife

What to do:

  1. Show your child the directions for making gelatin jigglers that appears on the box of a brand name gelatin.
  2. Let him help you make the mixture according to package directions.
  3. Pour the mixed gelatin onto a cookie sheet. Refrigerate to set.
  4. After the gelatin has set, invite your child to use a plastic knife to cut the gelatin into shapes. (Geometric shapes are the easiest.) Seasonal or holiday shapes can be cut using cookie cutters.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What do you think will happen when you mix dry gelatin with water?
  • What shapes would you like to cut the firm gelatin into?
  • What color is the gelatin? What other colored gelatin would you like to make?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing small muscle skills and an understanding of shapes.
