Cake in a Basket

Cake in a Basket

[30 Minutes]

Try this new way to make and serve a cake! It's especially fun during the spring holidays.

You'll need:

• 1 cake mix • 1 cup shredded coconut • jelly beans • green food coloring • 1 shallow 8-inch or 9-inch round basket with handles or 13 x 9-inch oblong basket • empty jar • 1 yard ribbon • cooling rack • baking pan similar in size and shape to the basket • measuring cup and spoons • aluminum foil • plastic wrap • prepared white frosting

What to do:

  1. Together wash your hands before cooking.
  2. Make the cake by following the directions on the package. Let your child help with mixing the ingredients.
  3. Don't forget to select a pan that will fit into a basket; otherwise, you may have to cut your cake in half so that it fits.
  4. Let the cake cool until you can touch it.
  5. Cover the cake loosely with plastic wrap.
  6. Put it in the freezer for 1-2 hours.
  7. Line a basket with aluminum foil.
  8. Place the frozen cake into the foil-lined basket.
  9. Invite your child to help you frost the cake.
  10. To make the grass, put the coconut with a few drops of green food coloring in a covered jar. Encourage your child to shake the container until the coconut turns green.
  11. Together place this "grass" on top of the frosting.
  12. Your child can hide the jelly bean "eggs" in the "grass."
  13. Tie a ribbon on the handle. What a unique way to present this special cake!

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What happened to this liquid batter after we baked it?
  • How can we put it inside the basket?
  • Did you enjoy making this special cake with me?
