Everyday Objects

Surrealism is a movement in art and literature which shows the unconscious mind as in dreams and your imagination. Famous for their surreal works of art were Salvador Dali, and Rene Magritte. In this type of art anything can happen. It is the art of the unbelievable. Think of the unexpected and unbelievable as you and your child create surreal art.
You'll need:
pencil eraser water colors white paper for drawing object to draw ( a chair, a shoe, any inanimate object)
What to do:
- If possible, print out these directions. Read them through together before you begin.
- Together, gather everything you'll need and always remember art safety.
- With your child choose an object that will be your subject.
- Let your child place this object next to the drawing paper.
- Let him use the pencil to draw. Explain that the object can be big enough to fill the whole paper and ask him to draw all the details of the object.
- Now use your imaginations and fill the drawing with people, animals, mountains, boats, whatever comes to mind.
- You and your child may wish to create astonishing scenes.
- Use the watercolors to paint in the characters.
- Talk together about what you have created.
Useful information:
This surreal painting was fun to create. You can really let your imagination go wild. My brother and I created one togehter. Next time I am going to draw one with my dad. He has an amazing imagination. (Bobby, age 12)
