Beat It!
[20 Minutes]
Recycle empty containers from your kitchen into a drum set. Add some kitchen utensils and your child can explore the world of sound.
You'll need:
empty containers such as oatmeal canisters, coffee cans, tissue boxes, cereal boxes masking tape wooden spoons, metal spoons, spatula music from a radio, CD or tape
What to do:
- Save a variety of empty containers. Show them to your child and talk about what came in each one.
- Invite your child to tap on the containers with her hands. Talk about the differences in sound that she hears.
- Offer the kitchen utensils and let her explore the differences in sound produced by each.
- Invite her to make a "drum set" by taping the containers together.
- Turn on some music and encourage your child to "beat" along. Clap out the beat of the music and encourage her to keep the beat on the drums.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Which "drumstick" did you like best? Which made the best sound?
- If you were going to be in a band, what instrument would you like to play?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, your child is developing eye/hand coordination, an understanding of cause and effect, and listening skills.
