Inviting Ants
[20 Minutes]
Little creatures are fascinating to young children. What's more fun than watching ants move along the dirt on a warm sunny day?
You'll need:
juicy piece of fruit
What to do:
- As you take your child on a walk outdoors, look closely for some ants on the ground.
- Place a small piece of juicy fruit on the dirt and invite the ants to visit.
- Watch closely as they come and gather for a nibble. Talk about how the ants move, where they live and what they eat.
- Remind your child to watch where he steps so that he doesn't hurt the ants, or in the case of red ants, that they don't hurt your child.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- How do the ants crawl? Fast or slow?
- The fruit is sweet. Are they swarming on the fruit?
- Do you like fruit too? Which kind?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop observational skills, and language skills.
