Inviting Ants

Inviting Ants

[20 Minutes]

Little creatures are fascinating to young children. What's more fun than watching ants move along the dirt on a warm sunny day?

You'll need:

• juicy piece of fruit

What to do:

  1. As you take your child on a walk outdoors, look closely for some ants on the ground.
  2. Place a small piece of juicy fruit on the dirt and invite the ants to visit.
  3. Watch closely as they come and gather for a nibble. Talk about how the ants move, where they live and what they eat.
  4. Remind your child to watch where he steps so that he doesn't hurt the ants, or in the case of red ants, that they don't hurt your child.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How do the ants crawl? Fast or slow?
  • The fruit is sweet. Are they swarming on the fruit?
  • Do you like fruit too? Which kind?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop observational skills, and language skills.
