My Texture Book

My Texture Book

[20 Minutes]

Developing the senses is lots of fun as you make this special book. There are textures in objects all around you!

You'll need:

• cardboard sheets • glue • binder rings • textured materials (fabric--velvet, fake fur, chiffon, lace; aluminum foil; sand paper; cotton balls)

What to do:

  1. Collect as many of the above suggested materials as possible. Talk about the textures with your child and use words such as "rough," "smooth," "soft," and "shiny."
  2. Help your child glue each textured piece to a cardboard sheet.
  3. Punch two holes in the left side of each cardboard page. Insert metal rings.
  4. Show your child how to flip through the pages.

How to use:

  1. Encourage your child to share this book with you.
  2. Look at the materials and touch each one. Ask, "What do you see?" and "How does it feel?"

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How many different things are in your book? Let's count them.
  • How do they feel? (soft, hard, fuzzy, rough, smooth, etc.)
  • Can you find something in your room that is soft? Let's go touch it together.

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop small muscle skills and language skills. It also gives your child an opportunity to explore the sense of touch.
