A Fun Accordion Book

A Fun Accordion Book

[15 Minutes]

Over the years, books have taken on many forms. In ancient times books were made from clay tablets impressed with a writing tool called a stylus. Scrolls made from papyrus were book forms of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. The first printed books date back to 868. These books were printed on wood blocks. Tipitaka, a Buddhist scripture, was more than 130,000 pages. Make this accordion type of book and write about your favorite things.

You'll need:

• scissors • ruler • glue • pencil • crayons • sheet of paper (8-1/2 inches x 11 inches)

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. Let your child use a ruler to draw lines down a sheet of paper dividing it into 3 equal parts. Leave 1/4 inch extra at one edge as a tab for gluing.
  4. Show her how to turn the paper and divide the page into 4 parts. Cut across these strips.
  5. Attach strips together by placing glue on the tabs.
  6. Accordion-fold the book.
  7. With your child, choose a topic such as favorite foods, things to do, sports, and so on.
  8. Invite her to begin to write a story or a journal.
  9. She may wish to use the folds as guidelines for the sequence of a story.
  10. She may wish create her book all at once, or she may wish to add to it over a period of time.
  11. Encourage her to draw or cut and paste pictures to illustrate the book.
  12. Consider adding labels to the pictures.
