Family Vegetable Soup

Family Vegetable Soup

[60 Minutes]

When the family works together to make vegetable soup, the results are tasty. The real reward however, is the pride everyone will feel in a job completed together.

You'll need:

• 6 cups water • 2 cups tomato juice • vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, celery, beans and corn • salt and pepper • large cooking pot • spoon • peeler • sharp knife (ADULT USE) • plastic knife or table knife

What to do:

  1. Gather the family together to make vegetable soup. Each person can help or work together with a partner.
  2. Let your child help you measure the water and tomato juice to make the soup base.
  3. Explore the vegetables together, then invite your child to help peel them and cut them up.
  4. Place the vegetables in the pot along with some salt and pepper.
  5. Put the pot on the stove and cook over medium heat until the vegetables are tender.
  6. Invite each person in the family to do one job in setting the table.
  7. Then serve the soup with crackers or biscuits for everyone to enjoy.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Which of the vegetables is the same color on the outside as on the inside?
  • Do you know which vegetables grow underground and which grow above the ground?
  • Do you like eating soup? What do you like to eat with it?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing social skills and math skills.
