Beaded Entry Way

Beaded Entry Way

[30 Minutes]

Although the question of the oldest beads is still in dispute, beads may date back as far as 300,000 years ago. At that time, beads made out of teeth and other objects were reported to have been found in Austria. About 40,000 years ago beads made out of ostrich eggs were found in Africa. Today beads are made out of many different materials. Use plastic beads to make a unique decoration for your room.

You'll need:

• large plastic beads with small holes • thread • needle • scissors • pushpins • ribbon (optional) • masking tape

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through before you begin.
  2. Gather everything you'll need and always remember art safety.
  3. Decide where you would like to hang beads. You may want to check with an adult first to make sure it is okay to put pushpins in the woodwork.
  4. Thread the needle, knot the end, and string about three inches of beads.
  5. If it is okay to use a pushpin, put the pin through the knot and attach the beads to door frame, window frame, closets, or furniture.
  6. Think of making the beads varying lengths, longer for doorways, shorter for windows.
  7. Instead of using pushpins, you could tape the string of beads to the doorways, windows, or furniture.

Useful information:

My sister and I share a room. We made a beaded curtain to divide the room and to give us some privacy. Now we like going through the curtain to visit with each other. (Toni, age 15)
