Book for the Senses
[30 Minutes]
You and your child can create a unique book to delight your child's very special senses.
You'll need:
magazines, newspapers, supermarket fliers glue textured materials (velvet, lace, fake fur, vinyl) 5 - 6 inch cardboard squares hole punch string or sturdy yarn or ribbon smells to match pictures chosen (perfume for flowers, spices or extracts for foods) scissors
What to do:
- Talk together about your child's senses. Ask her to describe some of her favorite smells, tastes, textures, sounds, sights.
- Search for pictures and textures to match her favorites.
- Help her glue the things she likes to look at on one page and the things she likes to listen to on another page.
- Also the things she likes to touch on other pages, (facing pages should have different textured materials: rough/smooth, fuzzy/flat, soft/slick) the things she likes to taste on another page and the things she likes to smell on the last page.
- You can put smells throughout the book by adding perfume for flowers, a few drops of lemon extract to a picture of fruit, sprinkle cinnamon on the glue for apple pie, and so on.
- Punch two holes at the same places in each piece of cardboard.
- Use string, yarn, or ribbon to attach the pages and make a book.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Can you tell me some words to add to the pages?
- What is your favorite smell? Sound? Feel? Taste? Sight?
