Winter Listening Walk

Winter Listening Walk

[20 Minutes]

Winter weather got you down? Cheer up and get outside with your child and have some fun with this winter listening game.

You'll need:

• portable tape recorder (OPTIONAL)

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to get ready to go outside with you to play a winter listening game.
  2. Listen, standing still for a few minutes as you leave the house. (You may wish to remove the ear muffs!) Do you hear any sounds? What about the wind? Are there any tapping sounds of bare branches hitting the house or windowpanes? Do you hear birds or small animals scampering around?
  3. Walk around for a while and see how many things you and your child can hear that are related to winter.
  4. Make a tape of interesting sounds, if you wish. Play these at dinner to see if the rest of the family can identify them.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Let's be really quiet and listen. Do you hear anything?
  • Let's try to make a sound like the wind. A bird. A squirrel.

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop listening skills and observational skills.
