Sugar Free Family Ice Cream

Sugar Free Family Ice Cream

[40 Minutes]

Who would believe you could make this ice cream while you take a family walk together? Try it and see!

You'll need:

• 1 empty 13 oz. coffee can with lid • 1 empty 34 oz. coffee can with lid • 1 cup milk • 1 cup whipping cream or liquid coffee creamer • 1/2 cup unsweetened apple juice concentrate, thawed • 3/4 tsp. vanilla • measuring cups and spoons • ice • rock salt • small bowls • spoons

What to do:

  1. Help your child measure the ingredients into the clean small coffee can.
  2. Place the small can inside the larger one. Layer ice cubes and rock salt in the space between the cans.
  3. Take the can outside on the driveway or sidewalk.
  4. Lay the can on its side and push the can with hands or feet to each other. Or take the can for a walk down the street or around the block.
  5. After 10 minutes, drain off the excess salt water and refill with more ice and rock salt. Take the ice cream for another walk of about 7-10 minutes.
  6. Remove the small can. Wipe it with a damp cloth to remove the salt water.
  7. Spoon the ice cream into small bowls and taste it.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What happened to the milk mixture? What happened to the ice cubes?
  • What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Do you think we could make it in a can?
