Make-Believe Balance Beam

Make-Believe Balance Beam

[15 Minutes]

Get fit with your child as you both try to balance on a pretend beam!

You'll need:

• long piece of yarn/rope or masking tape

What to do:

  1. Place the length of yarn or tape down to make a "balance beam".
  2. Invite your child to walk along it, placing one foot in front of the other.
  3. Suggest variations, such as walking with one foot on each side of the line, walking backwards, or hopping or jumping along.
  4. Encourage your child to use the rope or tape to make shapes to walk on.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Is it easier to walk with your arms helping you or when they are down at your sides?
  • Can you balance better when you are going quickly or slowly? Why do you think that is?
  • What shapes can you make with the yarn?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity provides experiences for developing agility and balance used to play all sports.
