Farmer's Market Math
[30 Minutes]
Explore the world of fruits and vegetables with your child and learn about measurement along the way. Even you may learn something new.
You'll need:
fruits or vegetables such as apples, pears, or potatoes
assorted containers: quart, peck, bushel
What to do:
- Write the words quart, peck, and bushel on a piece of paper and invite your child to predict which measurement unit would hold the most apples.
- Visit a farmer's market or produce department in your supermarket together and look for quart, peck, and bushel containers.
- Invite your child to compare the sizes of the containers.
- Explore the variety of fruits and vegetables at the market.
- Ask your child, "How many are you familiar with? How many are new?"
- Encourage her to predict how many apples are in the size container you decide to buy.
- At the market or when you get home, invite your child to count how many apples (potatoes, pears) the container holds.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Can you name the measurements in order from the smallest to largest quantity?
- Which new fruit or vegetable would you like to try?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity provides experiences for developing concepts related to measurement and math.
