My Rain Painting

My Rain Painting

[15 Minutes]

Amaze your child with an art activity where the rain creates designs!

You'll need:

• rain apparel • paper plate • food coloring • rain

What to do:

  1. Put on some rain apparel and take your child outdoors on a rainy day.
  2. Have him hold a paper plate where you sprinkled drops of food coloring in several colors.
  3. Encourage your child to hold the plate in the pitter-patter rain for about a minute. Watch together as the raindrops splatter and spread the food coloring all around the plate.
  4. Carefully bring the plate inside and allow it to dry.
  5. Talk about the design that was created by the rain and decide where to display this colorful spring art.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What happens when the rain drops hit your paper plate?
  • Tell me about your picture. What colors do you see?
  • Do you see any shapes?
  • What other activities could you do in the rain?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing observational skills and an understanding of cause and effect.
