Imagination Paper

Imagination Paper

[15 Minutes]

Here's a twist on a drawing activity that will spark your child's imagination.

You'll need:

• paper • scissors (ADULT USE ONLY) • markers or crayons

What to do:

  1. Cut one or two shapes out of a sheet of paper. (For example: cut a diamond out of the center of the paper and a small circle near a corner.)
  2. Make several different "imagination" papers for your child to choose from.
  3. Invite your child to choose a paper and draw a picture. She will probably draw around the shapes. As her drawing skills develop, she will begin to incorporate the shapes into her design.

How to use:

Talk about your child's use of space in the picture--what is in the middle, near the top, bottom, along the sides, in the corners.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Tell me about your drawing. Did you use the cutout shapes as part of your picture?
  • Would you like to draw another cutout picture?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing thinking skills, as well as developing an understanding of "part and whole".
