Drawing: Chalk Art

Drawing: Chalk Art

[20 Minutes]

Entice your budding artist with an outdoor "canvas". Watch the fun begin!

You'll need:

• sidewalk chalk • a safe sidewalk to draw on, a smooth surface or fence

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to create pictures and designs with different colors of chalk.
  2. Encourage her to color inside the designs by rubbing with the side of the chalk.
  3. The big "canvas" of the sidewalk allows your child to draw freely and produce very large art work.
  4. Clean up is easy with a little soap and the garden hose.

How to play:

  1. For some added fun try these activities:
  2. Play some "chalk" games such as hopscotch or tic-tac-toe right on the sidewalk.
  3. Invite her to draw family members in a line along the fence. Include your pets.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Look at your chalk now. Why are the pieces shorter than when we began?
  • What is you favorite design? Why?
  • What color do you like best? Why?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing small muscle skills, eye/hand coordination and creativity.
