Basketball Breakaway
[30 Minutes]
One of the fundamentals of basketball is accomplishing a "break away" to score those valuable 2 points that could mean the game. There's no better time to work on your break away passes than in the summer - with plenty of outdoor space, sunshine and free time! Pass again and again to perfect your break away so your team mate can catch it and lay that ball up for one fine shot!
You'll need:
outdoor basketball court 1 basketball sunglasses or a hat sunscreen water
What to do:
- If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
- Together, with your child gather everything you'll need.
- Explain to your child that you will be working on one of the most fundamental skills of basketball - the break away pass. Further explain that this skill, when properly executed, can be repeated over and over in a game situation successfully. You will both have to work on the long pass, catching it and laying the ball up for a shot.
How to use:
- After prepping your bodies for the outdoors - applying sunscreen, wearing comfortable, breathable clothes, filling your water bottles and hydrating ahead of time - you are ready to play.
- First practice one arm long passes to each other - making sure the ball is high enough to clear the heads of the other players who would be on the court if you were in a game situation.
- Now practice the long passes to each other as one runs toward the hoop, turning to see the pass to catch it.
- Now practice the long pass running toward the hoop and actually doing a lay up for the shot.
- Do this drill for each other 5 times each.
- When you feel well practiced - play as if in a game situation.
- Note how much running you have to do to complete this pass. The more break away passes you do - the more conditioned your body will become!
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Why is the break away pass so important?
- Can you explain the strategy of this play? Do you have to be tall to successfully complete it? Why or why not?
- Would practicing lay-up shots be a good idea for break away practice? Why?
