Creative Jump Roping

Creative Jump Roping

[15 Minutes]

Creative jump roping is what it’s all about to increase coordination and skill for this ageless and fun summertime activity. See how many different things you can do and remember in a row!

You'll need:

• jump rope

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. Always remember exercise safety.
  3. Explain to your child that you'll be doing some “creative jump roping,” for example:
jump rope on one leg ten times
jump rope on the other leg 10 times
    walk jumping rope.
  4. It will be challenging to remember them all in a row as you build your own special jump rope routine.

How to play:

  1. Pick a clear and level area to jump rope.
  2. Let your child decide who will go first.
  3. The first to go must have already decided the special jump rope routine they will be doing. When performing the new jump, you may wish to do it 10 times.
  4. On the “Go” command, the first jumper will try jumping rope 10 times in a row, then add their first special jump rope activity.
  5. After the first jumper finishes, the second jumper will add her own new jump to build on the first routine.
  6. Repeat this process as long as you can!
  7. What will hold out the longest; your body or your brain?

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Did you think it was harder to remember what to do or to actually do all the different jumps?
  • What else do you think we could do while jumping rope?
