Yellow Butterfly Song

Yellow Butterfly Song

[10 Minutes]

Take your child on a butterfly hunt in your yard or local park. Or, find a picture of a butterfly to share with your child. Then sing this simple song to get your child wondering about the delicate beauty of butterflies.

What to do:

  1. Sit with your child in your lap.
  2. Sing this song to your child. (Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star")
    Fragile, yellow butterfly,
Like a flower in the sky.
Are you smiling as you roam?
Do you know your way back home?
    Fragile yellow butterfly,
You're a flower in the sky.

  3. Repeat and encourage her to sing with you.
  4. Repeat and have your child pretend to be a butterfly and flutter around as you both sing the song.
  5. Think up new lyrics for the "Fragile yellow butterfly" line. For example, perhaps you could sing about a "pretty little robin bird" or a "graceful little morning dove."

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Why is a butterfly like a flower?
  • What does the word fragile mean? Can you think of something else that is fragile?

Useful information:

Listening to and memorizing lyrics helps children with attention span, memory recall, and rhyming word recognition...all important to the reading process in later years.
