Nutritious Ants on a Log

Nutritious Ants on a Log

[15 Minutes]

Raisins are made from dried grapes. They are either sun-dried or dehydrated chemically. Thompson seedless, zante, and muscat are the most common grapes used for raisins. Dark and golden raisins are made from Thompson grapes, currants are made from zante grapes. Muscat grapes produce an intensely sweet, musky flavored raisin. Raisins are high in sugar, contain minerals, vitamins, and are rich in iron. Use dark raisins to prepare a fun, nutritious snack.

You'll need:

• cream cheese • celery sticks • raisins • blunt knife

What to do:

  1. If possible print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. You may wish to go for a walk with your child and look for real ants on a log.
  4. Back at home, invite your child to spread cream cheese into the groove of the celery stick.
  5. Encourage her to place raisins on top.
  6. Talk about ants and enjoy this crunchy, nutritious snack together!

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Have you ever watched ants walking on a tree branch outside? What do you think they are doing?
  • Where else can you usually find ants?
  • What else could we make with cream cheese? Raisins? Celery?
