Fitness Walk

Fitness Walk

[30 Minutes]

With your child, plan a "power walk" route around your neighborhood and enjoy improved fitness.

You'll need:

• clock • timer • paper and pencil • water bottle

What to do:

  1. With your child, plan a safe route around your neighborhood where you can take a walk.
  2. Talk with your child and challenge her to think about how long she thinks it will take to "power walk" the route as quickly as she can.
  3. Check the clock to see what time it is and write down the actual time.
  4. Set the timer for the estimated length of time, then go out and "power walk" the route. Be sure to bring a water bottle to keep your body hydrated and healthy.
  5. When you return, check the timer. If time is left, figure out how much time it actually took, and how far off your estimate was. If the timer has run out, check the clock. How long ago did the timer run out of time?
  6. Challenge yourselves to improve your time the next time you go out for a power walk on the same route.
  7. The next time friends visit, challenge them to power walk with you. Soon, you'll start feeling healthier, and you'll be proud of your improvement!

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How do you think we could improve our time?
  • Why do you think that it is important to drink water while you exercise?
  • How can we show our daily times on a chart or graph?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing math skills and improving general fitness.
