I Love Soil

I Love Soil

[15 Minutes]

Take a walk outdoors with your child and play explorer in the soil! What do you see? Don't forget to look for rocks and stones.

What to do:

  1. Look for both soil and sand. Encourage your child to talk about the difference in texture and color of both the soil and the sand. Can you find stones and pebbles, too?
  2. Sing this song with your child. (Tune: "Frere Jacques"/"Are You Sleeping")
I love soil, you love soil,
    Brown, soft soil, mushy soil.
Find it all around, make a hill or mound.
Find some soil, find some sand.

I love mud, you love mud,
    Brown, soft mud, mushy mud.
Squishy, squashy mud, scrunchy, squeezy mud.
Find some mud, find some mud.
  3. Repeat; act out the words together.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What do you think will happen when we add water to soil?
  • What do we do in the soil?
  • Do you like to play in the soil?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing language skills, observational skills, and an understanding of cause and effect.
