Storybook Math

[30 Minutes]

Does your child enjoy reading books with you? Is it time to begin teaching some simple math skills? Then choose one of these books for your next story time together!

You'll need:

• your child's favorite counting picture book

What to do:

  1. Choose a book and invite your child to help you count the same objects in the pictures as the story unfolds or the pages are turned.
  2. Teach your child to touch each object as its number name is said. This will help her make the connection between the name and the amount. Touching one object for one number is called one-to-one correspondence, and it is an essential skill in early mathematical thinking.
  3. When objects in the book can also be found in your home, invite your child to gather or create drawings or pictures of the same objects as those in the book. Help her recount both the real objects and the pictured ones.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Do you like counting books?
  • Is there anything else we could count on this page? In this book?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity provides experiences for developing concepts related to number recognition and math.
