Homemade Blocks

Homemade Blocks

[20 Minutes]

No need to spend a lot of money on one of the BEST toys every child should have.

You'll need:

• large recycled household packaging • packing tape • contact paper or textured materials • crumpled newspaper

What to do:

  1. Collect different empty containers that can be recycled into homemade blocks. These can be food packaging, diaper wipe containers, or laundry soap boxes.
  2. Encourage your child to assist you in filling the boxes with crumpled up newspaper which will increase the durability of the "blocks".
  3. You may want cover the boxes with contact paper or with textured materials such as felt. The box edges or corners could be reinforced with the packing tape.
  4. Encourage your child to count the blocks as they are stacked. Then invite her to knock them down.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How high can you stack these blocks before they will fall down?
  • What would you like to build with your new blocks?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop small muscle skills and pre-math skills.
