Apple Sort

Apple Sort

[15 Minutes]

The fall season provides us with luscious apples in a variety of colors. Play an apple sorting game with your child and enjoy the crunchy fruit for a snack.

You'll need:

• 3 apples of each color--green, red, and yellow • 3 paper plates OR string or yarn made to form 12"-diameter circles • basket or bowl

What to do:

  1. Arrange the paper plates in front of your child.
  2. Show her the bag or basket of apples. Encourage her to talk about the different colors.
  3. Ask her to count the number of apples of each color.
  4. Invite her to sort the apples according to color on the paper plates.
  5. Let her choose an apple and enjoy a snack of fresh fruit.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What color were the apples?
  • How many of each color did we have?
  • What color did you choose to eat? How did it taste? What did it sound like? What did it feel like?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop sorting skills, matching skills, and an understanding of "same and different".
