Bubbles in the Air
[30 Minutes]
Bubbles are magical. Take a bowl of bubbles outside and relax in the grass as you watch the bubbles float to the sky. It's also one of the cleanest activities you can do with your child!
You'll need:
hand egg beater or wire whisk electric mixer liquid dish washing detergent water
What to do:
- Help your child use a hand beater or wire whisk to make mounds of bubbles in a small bowl filled with detergent. Ask your child, "Do you think there is air in the bubbles?"
- Next, use an electric mixer to whip up suds while your child watches. Are there more suds than with a hand beater or whisk? Do more bubbles mean there is more air? Can you see the air? Can you feel it?
- Take the mixture outside and challenge your child to blow bubbles from the bowl into the air. Do they float? How high?
- While blowing bubbles, you can sing this song together. (Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star")
Bubbles, bubbles in the air, Floating here and floating there. Pink and yellow; purple, blue, Float to me and float to you. Bubbles, bubbles in the air, Floating here and floating there.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Why do you think bubbles float up? Can you catch them before they pop?
- What colors can you see in the bubbles? Which is your favorite bubble color?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity creates a sense of wonder, curiosity, and provides your child with experiences for developing concepts related to science.
