Torn Tissue Paper Sun Catcher

Torn Tissue Paper Sun Catcher

[30 Minutes]

Show your child how to transform a few pieces of tissue paper and a little liquid starch into a beautiful butterfly. Place this in a nearby window to catch the sunshine!

You'll need:

• waxed paper • liquid starch • paintbrush • scissors • tape • colored tissue paper

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to tear up different colored tissue paper into 1-inch pieces.
  2. Show him how to dip a brush into liquid starch and spread it on a piece of waxed paper.
  3. Encourage your child to pick one of the pieces of tissue paper and put it on the waxed paper, so it sticks. Repeat with different tissue paper pieces. When they overlap, your child will discover a new color has appeared.
  4. From time to time, apply more starch.
  5. When the paper is covered with tissue paper, set it aside to dry.
  6. When dry, help your child fold the waxed paper in half and cut into half the shape of a butterfly. Open and tape in a window. Watch the light stream through the picture.
