Funny People Picture

[15 Minutes]

It's a good thing you've been saving all those old magazines. Isn't it great when you can recycle and create something new and wonderful with your child?

You'll need:

• old magazines • glue • scissors • 5 sheets of 8-1/2 x 11-inch paper • crayons, pencils, or markers • stapler

What to do:

  1. Go through magazines with your child to find 5 full-length pictures of people (with their heads, bodies, and feet) all approximately the same size. (The more different they are in all other ways, the funnier the book will be.)
  2. Help your child cut out each picture and then cut it into 3 parts--head, torso, and legs.
  3. Encourage her to mix and match the body parts to create a "funny" person and glue the parts on one sheet.
  4. Invite your child to add a background to her picture.
  5. Encourage her to repeat the process with the other body parts, creating 5 pages of funny people.
  6. Staple the pages together into a book.
  7. Go through the pages together, and encourage your child to tell a story about each funny person or weave all of the funny people into one story.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • You've made some interesting, funny people. Where do they live? What do they do all day?
  • Which one is your favorite? Why?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is learning about the relationship of parts to whole and is developing creativity.
