Magazine Spy Game

Magazine Spy Game

[30 Minutes]

Here's an indoor game that you and your child can play together which is quiet and relaxing. It will help your child develop observation skills.

You'll need:

• magazines with interesting, detailed pictures

What to do:

With you child, collect several magazines that have pictures with lots of detail and color. You can find children's magazines in libraries and bookstores.

How to play:

  1. Find a cozy spot where you and your child can sit together.
  2. Start out by discussing the details of the picture. Point out things that your child may not see.
  3. While looking at the magazines together, discuss the shapes of things, the colors, the shadowing, the texture, and funny or interesting details.
  4. Using the same picture, play the "I Spy" game. You might say, "I spy something that you can eat", or "I spy something beautiful in nature".
  5. Now, your child must start listing the objects in the picture that answers your clue. When your child guesses your spy, it's her turn to spy something for you to guess.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Did you know that there are so many things to see in one picture? What are some of your favorite objects you observed?
  • Can you think of other games to play while looking at a picture?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity provides experiences for developing concepts related to reading, and writing. Looking for objects in pictures develops keen observational skills.
