Red Light, Blue Light

Red Light, Blue Light

[15 Minutes]

Your child can learn about colors and movement as you play together with flashlights.

You'll need:

• two flashlights • red plastic cellophane • blue plastic cellophane • rubber bands

What to do:

  1. Cover the bulb end of one flashlight with red cellophane and the bulb end of the other with blue cellophane. Secure the cellophane with a rubber band.
  2. Darken the room or wait until nighttime.
  3. Turn on both flashlights. Shine them on the floor. Ask your child to step into the red light and then into the blue light.
  4. Keep the colored lights moving in front of him as he follows your directions. Vary the movement by asking him to hop or jump into the light.
  5. Give him a flashlight, so you can follow his directions.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Which light do you like best--red or blue?
  • Where else could we shine the flashlight?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop large muscle skills and balance, and an understanding of color.
