Feeling Basket
[20 Minutes]
Learning to use all five senses is an important task for young children. This feeling basket will have your child touching, talking, and making discoveries about everyday objects or toys.
You'll need:
picnic basket or empty shoe box assorted small toys large cloth napkin
What to do:
- Place one or more objects in the basket without your child seeing. Cover the objects with the cloth.
- Invite your child to put his hand inside the basket and try to guess what the object is.
- Encourage your child to use words to describe the object by asking questions, such as: "Is it smooth or rough?" "Can you tell what shape it is?"
- Let your child choose objects for you to guess. Model your thinking process by "talking out loud" as you investigate the object. This will expand his vocabulary and show him how you go about guessing what an object is.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Which objects were easy to figure out?
- Can you make a pile of objects that are the same in some way? Same color? Shape? Size?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, your child is developing sorting and language skills.
