Paste a Shape

Paste a Shape

[20 Minutes]

Few things are as much fun for young children as messy play. Make a messy project that your child will enjoy while experimenting with different shapes and colors.

You'll need:

• tape • scissors(ADULT USE ONLY) • paste or glue • cotton swabs • newspaper • various colors of construction paper

What to do:

  1. Lay out newspaper or a drop cloth on the table.
  2. Cut construction paper into a large circle, square, or triangle.
  3. Let your child tear the scraps into small pieces.
  4. Show your child how to put a thin layer of paste on the large shape with the cotton swab.
  5. Then show her how to stick the small, colored shapes onto the large shape. Talk about the different shapes and colors as she makes the picture.
  6. Ask your child where she would like to hang her shape picture, and then clean up together.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Which shape do you like best?
  • Do you like shapes with corners?
  • Can you help me find another circle in this room?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop eye/hand coordination and small muscle skills.
