Red Light, Green Light

Red Light, Green Light

[15 Minutes]

This traditional game is a great way for young children to practice movement skills.

You'll need:

• 1 paper plate • crayons • red and green paint (if you wish)

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to color (or paint) one side of the paper plate red and one side green.
  2. Talk about the meaning of the red light(stop) and the green light(go).
  3. Stand at a distance from your child and call, "Green light," as you show the green side of the plate. She can move ahead until you say and show the red side of the plate.
  4. Encourage her to try different movements such as walk, hop, skip, jump, slide, tiptoe, walk backwards, and run.
  5. Tell her how well she is doing listening and following directions throughout the game.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Which movements are easy to do? Which are hard?
  • Are there any traffic lights close to our house? Let's watch the cars next time and see what they do.

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child will be developing listening skills, large muscle skills, and learning how to follow directions.
